What started as a hobby has become a full-time profession for Lisa Olender, the president of the Indian River Antique Mall, which opened in August in Melbourne.
After 17 years as an inventory control specialist in the manufacturing industry, Olender switched gears in 2005 and converted her passion for antiques into a business. Earlier this year, she opened her 20,000-square-foot antique mall on Babcock Street. More than 100 retailers offer items within the mall.
Like anyone starting a business, Olender wants to build her brand, but she is going about it in an unusual way. Olender is building a network of local antique stores, all of which have agreed to refer clients to one another, and she is making a map of all the local antique shops to educate shoppers on their options.
